Backing COB early: how Dicolor brought chip-on-board LED to Australia

When chip-on-board LED was still new to the Australian market, Dicolor backed it early for fine pitch. Here is how COB came to market and why it matters indoors.

Ask anyone who specifies fine pitch indoor LED what actually moved the category forward, and chip-on-board comes up quickly. COB took the fragile, exposed pixels of a close-viewing screen and sealed them under a single protective layer. Tougher, cleaner, easier to live with. When that technology started to mature, Dicolor was early to back it for the Australian market.

Rewind a few years. Surface-mount, or SMD, was the accepted way to build a fine pitch wall. It worked, and it still does for plenty of jobs. But SMD mounts each tiny red, green and blue LED as its own package on the board, which leaves them exposed. On a fine pitch screen viewed up close, in a boardroom, a broadcast studio or a control room, that exposure shows up as knocked pixels, moiré, and a surface that does not enjoy being touched.

COB took a different route. It bonds the LED chips straight onto the board and seals them under one resin layer. The result is a flatter, more durable surface with a wider viewing angle, higher contrast and far less moiré. For the close-viewing work that fine pitch is built for, it was a clear step forward.

Dicolor had spent two decades doing one thing: building LED. That focus is why the move to COB was not a gamble. The research was already deep, the manufacturing already tuned for fine pitch, and the quality control already in place. Backing COB was less a leap and more the next logical step for a manufacturer that had been heading toward higher resolution and tougher screens for years.

Our job in Australia was to bring it here properly. That meant getting the first COB onto real sites and making sure local support was ready before we put the technology in front of integrators. A new display type is only as good as the team standing behind it when a project goes live. We were not interested in selling COB as a headline. We were interested in it doing the job on real installs, day after day.

Today COB sits at the centre of our fine pitch and All-in-One ranges. The All-in-One displays in particular take what COB does well and package it so the screen arrives ready to run. For an integrator that means fewer moving parts, a cleaner install, and a surface that holds up in the real world.

The wider point is the one worth keeping. New display technology turns up often, and most of it is noise. The skill is knowing which shift is real, backing it early, and being ready to support it here rather than leaving integrators to work it out on site. COB was one of the real ones, and we were in early.

If you are weighing up COB for a fine pitch project, that is a conversation we are always happy to have.
